The Gentle Giant

By Avon’s edge our Giant worked,
He carved for love the cliffs and earth.
He split the gorge and shaped the stone,
Then built a chair to rest alone.
He drank his ale as night drew near,
And slept as moonlight wandered clear.
His brother then stole the river’s claim,
And left his heart to stone and flame.
But in ancient rocks his soul lives on,
With marjoram wild through ages gone.
His spirit alive through gin once more,
Distilled beside the Bristolian shore.
With blackcurrant dark and elder fair,
An ode to him beyond compare.
The Giant, woken from stone and lore,
Now rumbles through his lands once more.
